The Case for Trump Short Essay

The 2016 election was very controversial and took many people by surprise. In Victor Hansons book The Case for Trump he analyzes the cause behind Trump’s victory and some of the reasons why having Trump as a president may not be as negative as it has been made out to be by the “elite culture” and “ancien regime” he describes. This cultural elite is supposedly the top portion of Americans who are well off financially and typically part of a privileged group. Hanson explains that this cultural elite are the ones who are mainly opposed to Trump and are responsible for much of the negative views that people have developed towards him. Trump won the 2016 presidentail race in part due to his rhetoric which was appealing to many people who are racist and xenophobic, but he also won due to his promise for radical change and his ability to appeal and resonate with the working class in America.

Hanson start off by talking about the split in America that he characterizes as “The two Americas”. When speaking about the divide in the country that he has noticed he focuses heavily on the divide between big cities and, essentially, the rest of the country. This is when he starts to describe and hint at the cultural elite and ancien regime in American society. By focusing on the divide in America he starts to suggest that perhaps the reason Trump won the election was due to the fact the the half of America that voted for Trump was feeling ignored and neglected by the other half. Thus, Trump’s rhetoric about bringing real radical change and “Draining the Swamp” resonated with many of the people that felt as if they were being ignored by the current political leaders. Hanson utilizes the divide in America to help shed light as to why Trump’s campaign was successful and shows how there was more than racism, xenophobia, and sexism involved in the election of Trump. Trump reflected what many Americans wanted but where not seeing in the politicians they were previously electing. Nonetheless, the negative rhetoric that Trump had on various groups of people, especially minorities, did help him gain support from people who are racist, xenophibic and sexist but as Hanson explains many of his voters came from a place in which they simply felt they were being ignored by mainstream politicians and having an outside man would bring them the change they wanted.

Along with Hansons argument as to why Trump won the election he also brings up something which he describes as the ancien regime or cultural elite in American society. Hanson argues that there is a regime in place that actively sought to oppose Trump and find ways to make sure his decisions are not carried through in the government. The evidence that Hanson presents for this ancien regime shows some actions that may have been taken against Trump in order to ensure that his decisions do not have an impact on the government. The presence of the Ancien regime is debatable and the manner in which Hanson presents it makes it appear as a very concrete and organized group that is actively going against Trump through covert methods. There is no doubting that actions are being taken against Trump in order to prevent him from achieving certain things, but that is simply the nature of politics in America. Perhaps Trump has experienced opposition more, than in comparison to other presidents but I believe the idea of the Ancien regime is not as serious as Hanson is making it out to be and that Trump has simply faced more opposition politically because of his status as an outsider to politics.

Clearly racism, xenophobia, and sexism played a role in Trump’s election but I think that Trump’s rhetoric for radical change and him being a political outsider also heavily influenced the 2016 election in his favor and to the idea of an Ancien regime actively opposing Trump I believe that it could better be explained as a higher level of opposition in  the government to his actions and ideas due to how removed he was and is to the mainstream political world.

ERA “Dark Days”

The film Dark Days follows the lives of an array of homeless citizens of New York who are living in the subway tunnels below the city. Some of these people are runaways, drug addicts, or simply caught in a bad situation that forced them into homelessness. Regardless of how they arrived to be homeless they all end up finding ways to survive and thrive in the tunnels below the city. Most of the residents live in “shacks” that they build out of materials that they have found typically from garbage in the city. Often times they have common things in these makeshift houses like tv’s and stoves that they have found tossed out in garbage throughout the city. The people in these tunnels have access to electricity that costs them nothing. Essentially these people are living in the tunnels without having to pay any bills which is how many of them explain how they got trapped in this situation. During the day many of the residents resurface to search through garbage for anything to sell. By doing this daily some claim to make $60 on a good day. Without having bills to pay this allows them to buy food and maintain their lifestyles in the tunnels. Unfortunately, amtrak decided that they were going to use the tunnels that the homeless people were living in and were going to remove all of the inhabitants of these tunnels in a short period of time. Luckily for the residents of the tunnels a group that helps homeless people in New York talked with Amtrak about extending the time they had to get all of the homeless people out and even found a government program that helps homeless people in New York attain temporary housing. Thus, at the end of the movie we see many of the people who were living in the tunnels below the city now living in actual apartments that are provided to them by the government. Clearly this documentary shows us how being a part of a community in any situation is beneficial in that even in the tunnels a community was created that looked out for one-another. The ideas on community and an American bond are relevant in that at the end of the film we see these people rejoining the larger community and living a better life than before.

ERA The Exorcist

The movie The Exorcist is supposedly based on a series of real events and is the story of a woman and her daughter who gets possessed by an evil spirit. After a series of strange and unexplainable events like her daughter levitating and other supernatural occurrences her mother begins to suspect that there is something seriously wrong with her daughter. She begins to take her to a number of psychologists and her daughter ends up going through a variety of tests to try and determine why these strange things are happening. After the tests and evaluations reveal that there is nothing physically or mentally wrong with her daughter, her suspicion of a type of evil possession is even stronger. As her daughter gets worse two priests become involved as it is suggested that an exorcism may remove the evil spirit that has come to possess her body and cause all of these things to happen. After attempting the first exorcism one of the priests backs out after he thinks he cannot do it and the other priest dies. After what seems like a failed attempt to remove the evil from the girl the other priest returns and ends up sacrificing himself in order to finally free the girl of the evil spirit she was possessed by. Clearly this was a very provocative and intense movie at the time of its release. When the movie was first released there were efforts to have it not shown and many people disapprove of the movie in general. If released today, would the movie still have the same affect? If not does that show anything about American society and culture and how people have changed their views over time?

“Cheap Sex” Ch.4

In chapter 4 of “Cheap Sex” the author focuses on pornography and masturbation. The author says that the availability and use of porn has skyrocketed in recent years and this newfound increase in usage has direct impacts on the mating and dating market as well as impacts on individual people. Due to the increase in availiability of technology, pornography has become something that is easy to access for free. The author claims that pornography can have an array of negative impacts on both individual people and their relationships. Regnerus claims that pornography presents situations that are not realistic and impact the views and ideas that consumers of pronography will have on sexual experiences. These views are distorted from pronography and can negatively impact the ideas that consumers of pornography will have. Not only does the author claim that pornography distorts the views of consumers he also says it makes them less likely to go out into the real world to pursue a relationship. It is clear that the author sees pornogrpahy as a hinderence to the development of healthy relationships in American society. What are the solutions to this issue?

“Cheap Sex” Ch.3

In this most recent chapter Regnerus heavily focuses on the use of dating websites and how it has transformed the “dating and mating market”. Regnerus claims that dating websites like tinder have created a market in which sex can simply be comodified and purchased in a sense that the apps themselves are created for that sole purpose. He further explains that the dating market has been transformed by these new apps in a way that creates short-lived relationships that are constantly recycled through many people. The author says that these apps have devalued what people are looking for in amate and has created a quick and fast way to find a mate. Regnerus believes these apps are bad and are devaluing the relationships that are often formed in the dating market. He says the apps make it so that people can temporarily enter the market for one purpose and leave shortly after. I believe that these apps are not necessarily bad and that if people are using these apps to make a quick and easy “transaction” in the dating market, as Regnerus would call it, that is a choice that is up to them and if people want to engage in the mating market in this manner they would do it with or without dating apps. Simply, dating apps just make the market more accessible and I believe there is nothing dangerously wrong with that.
