Cormac McCarthy

He doesn’t do a lot of interviews, but here he is a few years ago talking with Oprah Winfrey about his book The Road (which I have used in another course I teach).

When I saw this posted, I was inspired to watch due to the fact that it was an interview with Oprah. (Side note/fun fact I used to run home from the bus stop after school to watch her show) As I watched this interview though, it was nice to see the characteristics of Cormac McCarthy, he seems like a very calm, relaxed, individual. He does not care about the fame or fortune, rather he just writes his novel for his own pleasure. While listening to this I picked up on two lines that inspired me personally. He said, “you shouldn’t be talking about it, you should be doing it” and “can’t plot things out, just have to trust where it comes from.” These two quotes reminded me of John Grady Cole and his life because he picks up everything and leaves home to find his own adventure and identity, he does this with no plan. Therefore within these two little lines, you can see the resemblance of Cormac and John.

That’s pretty observant. I think he does build a little of his own personality into some of his characters.
