Haidt Social Justice

I do agree with Haidt on the topic of equality of outcomes causing problems. Haidt speaks about a certain example of Obama changing required suspension rates in schools based on race. It will eventually cause problems if whites and asians are prosecuted more aggressively in disciplinary actions, while blacks and latinos are let off the hook. The blacks and latinos will feel that they can get away with more and be more tempted to get in trouble. The whites and asians will feel overly attacked and will feel like they are being overly punished so that the schools can reach the balanced suspension rates that are required.

Another example that Haidt starts his presentation off with is the different PHDs given out in America to males and females. In certain majors, such as engineering, males have a lot more PHDs than females. In other majors, such as business, females have more. Haidt says that many people won’t be satisfied until the numbers are split 50/50 because the numbers right now are an example of sexism. Haidt asks the question of, is this idea truly realistic? This may be an example of social justice but it isn’t guaranteed to be possible. This balance in numbers may cause problems for society because it would force certain people out of different majors.
